Everything IS a GIFT!

gift-200

Today, I attended a funeral for a friend’s father. The eulogy was so meaningful for me … it was such a gift! The lesson to “live the present moment” well has remained with me. (Chicago, U.S.A)

I appreciated that I have a family to love and one that cares for me and that I’m healthy. (California, U.S.A)

Today my grandma and I both saw a dog living on the streets and we took him and gave it a shower. (California, U.S.A)

Today I rolled EVERYTHING is a Gift. I prayed and thanked God for all of the blessings he gives and thanked him for letting me love on a beautiful world. (California, U.S.A)

“Everything is a Gift!” The leaves have turned from green to yellows, oranges and reds in my neighborhood in Indianapolis, and now are falling. Feeling grateful for a bright sun, blue skies, and the leaves this cold fall day! (J.M., Indiana, USA)

ONLY What IS Needed!

need

‘ONLY What is Needed!’ was the direction given by The Earth Cube today. It started out with a ‘timed shower’ (get out quickly before the bell rings), followed by recycling/reusing some paper at work, followed by a lighter lunch than normal (soup/salad). Ok, maybe these are baby steps, but at least my awareness was there!” (Sao Paolo, Brazil)

My goal was to take a shower in a shorter amount of time so i can waste less water for the drought in LA. I used to take shower for more then 30 minutes and when i tried i started taking showers of 10 to less minutes. (California, U.S.A.)

Today I used only the water needed when I brushed my teeth. (California, U.S.A.)

Ho riutilizzato la cera delle candele bruciate la scorsa estate per produrne almeno 20 nuove senza utilizzare nuovi prodotti. (Luca, BS, Italy) [I reused the wax of candles burned last summer to produce at least 20 new ones without using new products.]

Oggi ho tirato il dado e mi e uscito solo ciò che è necessario! Per risparmiare energia elettrica, dopo la doccia, mi sono asciugato i capelli senza usare il phon. (Brescia, Italy) [Today I rolled the cube and Only What Is Needed came out! To save electricity, after the shower, I dried my hair without using a hair dryer.]

Ho usato l’acqua del lavandino per lavarmi i denti solo nei momenti in cui era necessario senza sprecare l’acqua. (Italy) [I used the sink water to brush my teeth only when needed without wasting water.]

SMILE on the World!

smile-200

Today was a ‘double’ Earth Cube special… living two sides of the cube at the same time: ‘NOW is the Time!’ and ‘SMILE on the World!’ I looked in my sock drawer this morning and realized how many I have and could share. So, I bundled the extras up others. Less is more! (Paris, France)

Today I was hanging my clothes that my mom had just washed. As I began hanging my clothes I saw some clothes that I really didn’t need anymore so I recycled them and gave them away to the Homeless Shelter. (California, U.S.A)

Had some alone time to reflect and talk to God about everything that has happened to me. Be thankful for everything because God always had a plan for everyone and everything. (California, U.S.A)

NOW is the Time!

now-200

The moment is NOW! The other day I realized I had the anti-smog mask in my scooter for a long time … I bought it and then I did not use it because I could not hold it and I said I will use it. One of my colleagues at work needed it because moving with a bicycle in a city like Rome is indispensable! So I did not hesitate to give it to her, without thinking about it anymore! (Rome, Italy)

My friends were mad at each other for weeks. I just couldn’t see them like that. So I made them talk and set things up. And they became friends again!!! 🙂 (California, USA)

Today my mom asked me to clean my room and wash the dishes. I told her I was going to do that tomorrow but then I remembered of what my mom was asking me to do so I stand up and went to go clean my room and wash the dishes. (California, U.S.A)

When i get home I usually procrastinate, so today instead of putting my responsibilities aside I started to do them right away when i got home. (California, U.S.A)

We’re All CONNECTED!

connected-200

The Earth Cube – ‘We’re All CONNECTED!’ it told me after rolling it today. I realized that I have been leaving my lights on when I leave the house, and so I went around and turned them off before going out for the evening. I even shut down my computer. What I do really does affect others! (Nairobi, Kenya)

Today on my way to school I found trash and water bottles in the parking lot. I picked up the trash and threw it in the trash can and the water bottle I recycled it in the recycling bin in our school. (California, U.S.A)

I recycled because I realized that little things like that have an effect on all of us. (California, U.S.A.)

I smiled and tried to get rid of the grudge i had with my neighbors and i feel healthier physically and emotionally. (California, U.S.A.)

Ogni settimana preparo con i miei genitori dei pacchi di vestiti vecchi da donare agli altri attraverso il servizio della Caritas. (Jose, Brescia, Italy) [Every week I prepare with my parents packages of old clothes to give to others through the service of Caritas.]

DISCOVER Amazing Things!

discover-200

‘DISCOVER Amazing Things!’ is what The Earth Cube recommended today. I’m working on a project this morning to prevent a river from being contaminated, to keep it clean for the next generation. Today, I need to go ‘deeper’ beyond the science to understand what is behind everything I do. (Indianapolis, USA)

Read articles about the different types of jewels and learned different types of ballroom dances. (California, USA)

Instead of staying home i decided to go for a hike and i discovered many things that i actually enjoy walking. So I recommend for whoever is out there to try the earth cube because not only can it help our community but it can help us as human beings. (California, U.S.A.)

I went running in the morning instead of the afternoon and found that I enjoyed it a lot more and realized how beautiful the park is at that time. (California, U.S.A.)

Ho guardato die documentari sul polo nord ma anche altri documentari sulla natura in generale. (Brescia, Italy) [I watched documentaries on the north pole but also other documentaries on nature in general.]

The Earth Cube in Action

This past school year a science teacher in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. implemented The Earth Cube as part of the Ecology unit. Her goal was to relate theory and practice in the study of the enviornment (food chains & web, energy flow in the ecosystem, interactions among organisms and the environment, nutrient cycles, and global issues).

The students rolled the cube (paper or online) each day for about two weeks and wrote their experiences in their journal. Their teacher commented after the project, “The Earth Cube empowered students to build relationships and take concrete actions, although small, and created some excitement and certainly awareness in being proactive to do something.”

Click the images above to see some examples of how they lived The Earth Cube! Here are some of their impressions as well:

Why do you think your teacher implemented the earth cube after the ecology unit?

I think my teacher implemented the earth cub after the ecology unit because we somewhat learned what’s affecting our world. With this earth cube, we start with small steps to better our world.

To give us the change in our daily routine, to really think about our environment.

So we have awareness about our surroundings and how we can help make our biosphere a safe and healthy place.

How did the earth cube help you in having awareness on how to protect our biosphere?

It made me actually think of ways I could protect our biosphere such as saving water and energy, recycling, and other things.

Now I stopped using the light when it’s sunny.

I noticed how ther are many things I could do to help the world. But we all have to work together.

It did help me have more awareness because ever since this was assigned, I have been actually looking for what I can do to help our earth without being told…

It reminded me everyday that a small task can be a great step towards protecting our biosphere. It also reminded me that there are endless amount of ways to help our earth…
