The Earth Cube

Today's Action, Tomorrow's Future

How can I live it?

Everyday we roll the cube and are challenged with a new task. What are some practical ways to live each of the 6 sides of The Earth Cube?

Everything IS a GIFT!

Reflect

Each person, each thing, is present as a gift for the other. If the pine trees glisten in the sun – it’s a gift! If a new baby crawls on the ground – it’s a gift! When we begin to see that everything around us has something of value to offer us, a sense of appreciation and gratitude grows within us and a desire to preserve and protect it for future generations.

Live it

  • Take a walk outdoors. Stop and find an insect – what shape and color is it? Where does it live? Does it live in a community?
  • Be grateful for all things in your life and treat them with care. The water you drink every day, the nutrients you take in, the medicines at your disposal. Thank nature for giving us these things.
  • Wound and blessings. Look at every daily difficulty or obstacle as a gift.

How am I a gift for others and the environment? Are there gifts I don’t see?

15%
Mountains are home to 15% of the world’s population
37.2T
The average human body is made up of 37.2 trillion cells

Many studies have linked GRATITUDE to better health

How did you live “Everything is a GIFT”?

“Everything is a Gift!” The leaves have turned from green to yellows, oranges and reds in my neighborhood in Indianapolis, and now are falling. Feeling grateful for a bright sun, blue skies, and the leaves this cold fall day!

(J.M. – Indiana, United States)

Today I rolled EVERYTHING is a Gift. I prayed and thanked God for all of the blessings he gives and thanked him for letting me love on a beautiful world.

(California, United States)

Today my grandma and I both saw a dog living on the streets and we took him and gave it a shower.

(California, United States)

I appreciated that I have a family to love and one that cares for me and that I’m healthy.

ONLY What IS Needed!

Reflect

How are we going to live sustainably on this planet? By taking only what is necessary to live our lives in relationship with everything else. Like a tree that draws up only the water and nutrients needed to grow and bear fruit, we too need to separate our wants from our needs. Let’s minimize our negative impacts by maximizing our positive ones. Let these individual choices be the inspiration for collective change!

Live it

  • Turn off computers at night. A computer and monitor in “sleep mode” can minimize electricity usage and costs.
  • Think twice before making a purchase. Do you really need a new cell phone? Is your purchase driven by a desire to be accepted by your peers?
  • Monitor food waste at your home. Are you cooking too much for your family? What is thrown out from your refrigerator each week?

What does my daily lifestyle say about my respect of the earth’s resources?

400lbs
Save 400lbs of CO2 /year by cutting your family food waste
in half
10 gal
Save 10 gallons of water by shortening your shower by 2 minutes
6-8%
Save 6-8% of energy by using just 1 degree less of heating or cooling

How did you live “ONLY what is needed”?

(Luca – Italy)

Today I used only the water needed when I brushed my teeth.

(California, United States)

My goal was to take a shower in a shorter amount of time so i can waste less water for the drought in LA. I used to take shower for more then 30 minutes and when i tried i started taking showers of 10 to less minutes.

(California, United States)

‘Somente o necessário!’ foi a direção mostrada pelo Dado da Terra hoje. Comecei com um “banho cronometrado” (tinha que terminar rapidamente, antes que tocasse o alarme), recicei/reutilizei alguns papéis no trabalho, em seguida optei por um almoço mais leve que o normal (sopa/salada). Ok, talvez sejam apenas pequenos passos, mas ao meno eu estava consciente!

SMILE on the World!

Reflect

Nothing speaks louder than positive actions to make the world a better place! Stopping to recycle our waste, re-using or re-purposing an old object, quickly turning off the shower, planting a community garden, eliminating the need for daily private transportation – all these are the ‘little things’ that bring about efficiency and sustainability in the environment. Every action during the day has a consequence! Don’t just ‘think’ about being pro-earth, make the move, and see the wonderful things that can result from it!

Live it

  • Hang your clothes to dry. This will save money and reduce your Carbon Footprint. It will also extend the life of your clothes.
  • Use both sides of paper. Print double-sided and put the drafts in the recycle bin.
  • Repair instead of replace. Fix electronic devices and clothes instead of buying new ones. Eliminate excess trash and pollution.
  • Recycle or give away used items. Before you throw things away, look for another way to use them, or find someone else that might need them.
  • Purchase used products or those made with recycled materials. Clothes, wooden matches, cardboard containers.

How could changing one habit make a difference for the next generation?

1/2ton
Drive 30 miles less per week to save more than 1/2 ton of CO2 per year
300
Ditch the plastic toothbrush and save 300 plastic ones over a lifetime!

Community gardens foster neighborhoods of trust, reciprocity and sharing

How did you live “SMILE on the world”?

Had some alone time to reflect and talk to God about everything that has happened to me. Be thankful for everything because God always had a plan for everyone and everything.

(California, United States)

Today I was hanging my clothes that my mom had just washed. As I began hanging my clothes I saw some clothes that I really didn’t need anymore so I recycled them and gave them away to the Homeless Shelter.

(California, United States)

Today was a ‘double’ Earth Cube special… living two sides of the cube at the same time: ‘NOW is the Time!’ and ‘SMILE on the World!’ I looked in my sock drawer this morning and realized how many I have and could share. So, I bundled the extras up others. Less is more!

The time is NOW!

Live it

  • Do something small every day and share it. For example, after living one side of the cube, post it on social media or just by talking to friends. Spread your passion and good works person to person.
  • If you fail one day, simply start again the next day. The worst enemy of environment change is quitting from frustration and guilt. It’s ok to start over again and again.
  • Today not tomorrow. Action not inaction. At the end of each day, ask yourself: ‘What did I do?’.

What individual sustainable choice could be an inspiration for my community?

80%
of the world’s wastewater is released without treatment
500
It takes 500 years for a coffee pod to decompose

2010-2019 was the hottest decade on record

How did you live “The time is NOW”?

When i get home I usually procrastinate, so today instead of putting my responsibilities aside I started to do them right away when i got home.

(California, United States)

Today my mom asked me to clean my room and wash the dishes. I told her I was going to do that tomorrow but then I remembered of what my mom was asking me to do so I stand up and went to go clean my room and wash the dishes.

(California, United States)

My friends were mad at each other for weeks. I just couldn’t see them like that. So I made them talk and set things up. And they became friends again!!! ?

(California, United States)

Today was a ‘double’ Earth Cube special… living two sides of the cube at the same time: ‘NOW is the Time!’ and ‘SMILE on the World!’ I looked in my sock drawer this morning and realized how many I have and could share. So, I bundled the extras up others. Less is more!

(Paris, France)

The moment is NOW! The other day I realized I had the anti-smog mask in my scooter for a long time … I bought it and then I did not use it because I could not hold it and I said I will use it. One of my colleagues at work needed it because moving with a bicycle in a city like Rome is indispensable! So I did not hesitate to give it to her, without thinking about it anymore!

We’re All CONNECTED!

Reflect

Though it’s not always apparent, everything on the planet is in relationship with everything else – the cities, the forests, the ocean, the air. Everything. When something happens to one, it affects everyone and everything, nearby and far away – for good or for bad. When something is unhealthy – a smoking factory, a contaminated stream, a strip-mined mountain – everything and everyone around it also suffers, and our most vulnerable neighbors suffer the most.

Live it

  • Buy local products to reduce gas emissions caused by transporting products to distant markets.
  • Plant a tree or flowers in your neighborhood, school, or workplace.
  • Don’t throw trash in public places. Hold onto your garbage until you find a trash can.
  • Calculate your carbon footprint. Measure the amount of greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere because of your own food, energy and transportation use – then change your habits, in large or small ways, to reduce your footprint.

What can I do today to build a more positive connection?

1
One large tree can produce a day’s supply of oxygen for up to 4
people
20
A state shifting to 20% local food purchasing could create over 40k new jobs

Spending time with grandparents increases the
well-being of children

How did you live “We’re all CONNECTED”?

(Jose – Brescia, Italy)

The Earth Cube – ‘We’re All CONNECTED!’ it told me after rolling it today. I realized that I have been leaving my lights on when I leave the house, and so I went around and turned them off before going out for the evening. I even shut down my computer. What I do really does affect others!

(Nairobi, Kenya)

I smiled and tried to get rid of the grudge i had with my neighbors and i feel healthier physically and emotionally.

(California, United States)

I recycled because I realized that little things like that have an effect on all of us.

(California, United States)

Today on my way to school I found trash and water bottles in the parking lot. I picked up the trash and threw it in the trash can and the water bottle I recycled it in the recycling bin in our school.

DISCOVER Amazing Things!

Reflect

The world is filled with all sorts of incredible things between its highest mountain peaks and its deepest valleys on the ocean floor. An immense variety – of people, animals, plants, insects, microbes, soils, rocks, rivers, lakes, waterfalls – is waiting to be encountered by us! With each encounter we are forever changed – a new awareness, an increased sense of wonder, a widening of the soul inspired by beauty, a humble respect for the power of nature. These discoveries lead us on a journey of engaging moments, meaningful activities, and purpose-driven living!

Live it

  • Learn something new about the environment. Research threatened wildlife; find local species of flora and fauna needing help; find out where your local stream flows.
  • Explore nature nearby. Go to the countryside, practice ecotourism, travel to beautiful places, or dive for the first time. Feel the power of God. Rest in the arms of nature. Refresh and renew yourself to return to daily work.
  • Watch documentary films. Observe and understand the beauty and complexity of nature.

What natural phenomenon can you experience to see the world differently?

3
An octopus has three hearts
0
Zero plant species have a flower or blossom completely black in color
99.86%
The Sun accounts for 99.86% of the mass in our solar system

How did you live “DISCOVER amazing things”?

(Salvador – Bahia, Brazil)

I went running in the morning instead of the afternoon and found that I enjoyed it a lot more and realized how beautiful the park is at that time.

(California, United States)

Instead of staying home i decided to go for a hike and i discovered many things that i actually enjoy walking. So I recommend for whoever is out there to try the earth cube because not only can it help our community but it can help us as human beings.

(California, United States)

‘DISCOVER Amazing Things!’ is what The Earth Cube recommended today. I’m working on a project this morning to prevent a river from being contaminated, to keep it clean for the next generation. Today, I need to go ‘deeper’ beyond the science to understand what is behind everything I do.

(Indianapolis, United States)
